OPENING NIGHT: Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 6:00 pm-9:00 pm Keaau
Fine Art Center (formerly: Island Giclee), Shipman Industrial Park, Keaau,
HI 96749.

ELIGIBILITY: Top 50 non-slide-show/movie entries accepted into the
2009 Allen-Tarleton Memorial Contest is eligible. Eligible entries are
determined by the cumulative point total given to the accepted entry by the
judges regardless of category. If there are ties that will cause more entries
to be eligible than could be accommodated by the gallery, then the "Top 50" will
be determined by the judges.

Host club must package and mail all entries for its members and enclose a check payable to CCCH in the same amount as the postage used to send package. It is recommended that no glass be used as the last Hilo Exhibit resulted in a number of exhibits arriving with broken glass.

Other accepted entries may be eligible on a space-available basis.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

The exhibited entries need not be the print
version of the jpeg images. i.e. higher resolution tiff images of the entries
may be used to print the exhibited entry. All exhibited entries shall be
mounted with a frame size no larger than 36" x 36" and be wired ready to hang.
No saw-tooth hangers.

Each exhibited entry must have a label in the back of the exhibit stating
Title, Entrant's name, Club and Price or NFS. Each club will be provided a
Microsoft Word template upon which, all of their entrants' names, titles, club
names and prices shall be entered in the following format (The A-T committee
will assign and enter the appropriate exhibit number)

COMMISSION: All exhibited entries that are sold will have the
following deducted prior to payment to exhibitor: 10% of gross sales price
to Camera Club Council of Hawaii and 25% to Gallery.

DONATION REQUESTED: Any monetary donation towards the purchase of
food and drink at opening night is requested. Such monetary donation shall be
made payable to Camera Club Council of Hawaii.

RELEASE OF LIABILITY: Every exhibitor releases Keaau Fine Art Center
fka Island Giclee, its owners, agents and employees; Camera Club Council of
Hawaii ("CCCH"), its members and officers; the Hilo Photography Club, its
members and officers; Hawaii Photographic Society, its members and officers;
Maui Camera Club, its members and officers, and the Allen-Tarleton committee
members and volunteers from all liability from any damages whatsoever. Such
release of liability includes, but is not limited to, unauthorized publication
of the image, unauthorized use by a third person who may have downloaded such
image from the CCCH website, damage or destruction of the image, and any other
possible injury to the entrant's body, image or reputation. SUBMISSION OF ENTRY
FOR EXHIBITION IMPLIES ACCEPTANCE OF THE ABOVE RELEASE OF LIABILITY.

"Throughout the history of art, the nude figure has been a primary carrier of both ideal form and human expression. In ancient Greece, the nude was concerned with the body as a metaphor for spirit. Some of the great masters of photography, including Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston, Ruth Bernhard and Alfred Stieglitz photographed nudes in the landscape.

In this workshop we will explore photographing the nude in the landscape and the relationship between the female form and the elements of nature. Instruction in composition, establishing a relationship with the model and with nature, how to give direction, plus digital infrared techniques and more will be covered. The workshop will begin with a slide presentation, followed by hands-on photography in a private location."

Further technical details of the CCCH AT contest for those interested

First: Although HPS and a committee member felt that size should not matter if we state pixel dimension, it appears from Don Brown's steps that there is support for a maximum size limit for the entries. We believe, however, that his 400KB limit is too small for a sharp image. Thus we retained MCC's standard of 1 MB maximum. His steps can be used to ensure the 1 MB size and still be within pixel size dimension limits. (Let Joy know if you want her to give you his step-by-step requirements).

Second: Although the prospectus allows for a maximum size of 1024 pixels at the longest side, there is support for image sharpness fall-off due to the nature of projection such that the maximum 1024 pixel side should not be used. Don Brown recommended 924 pixel, one committee member recommended 1000 pixel.

Third: Although the prospectus does not state ppi size and Don Brown recommended a uniform 104 ppi, one committee member (who scored very high in the midyear image contest) recommended 300 ppi. Please be aware that if your image does not support a 300 ppi (such as images scanned at 72 dpi), you should not use 300 ppi because upsizing a low resolution image will degrade it.

Fourth: The standard projector's 1024x768 pixels projection favors landscape formated images. We felt that it is too late at this time to discuss whether we should require everyone to turn in a square image but are sending out this separate email as a cautionary warning.

Fifth: The specs and other details for InFocus IN26+ projector can be accessed from http://www.infocus.com/Support/Products/Projectors/IN26plus.aspx. Screen: Da-Lite Keystone Eliminator 60x60. We intend to color balance the projector prior to the final competition.

Option 2: Black & white night in Hilo and East Hawaii Cultural Center Fall Festival opening (Anubhav in charge).

Saturday, Nov. 7

Option 1: At sunrise, visit Halemaumau Crater; there is an active vent located there; may need Park passes. Later, visit Volcanoes National Park. Will meet up with Group in Option 2 for lunch at Volcano House at 12 noon, and then continue to photograph the Park.

Option 2:
Sunrise Lava boat tour; approximately $100 (depends on group size); leaves from Pohoiki at 5:45 a.m.; warning: seas may be rough and there is a health risk of breathing in toxic fumes; contact Susan Miyasaka if interested & she will make arrangements. Could meet up with Group in Option 1 for lunch at 12 noon at Volcano House and then continue to photograph Volcanoes National Park together.

Option 3:Workshop on Photographing "The Nude in Nature" by Kathleen Carr; held near Hilo, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (6 hours); $175 per person (includes model fee plus higher fee for Kathleen to travel to Hilo). Meet at 10 a.m. at the Komohana Agricultural Complex (875 Komohana St.) for a presentation by Kathleen & then travel by car (@ 10 minutes) to nearby secluded location for photo shoot. We need a minimum of 6 participants or this workshop will be cancelled. A maximum of 10 photographers will be allowed. Susan Miyasaka is in charge of logistics for this workshop.

6:00 p.m. – 9 p.m.: Keaau Fine Arts Gallery AT exhibit opening. Pot-luck, bring a dish to pass. CCCH annual meeting. (This is in lieu of a Banquet.)

Sunday, Nov. 8. Fly out of Hilo in late afternoon around 4 p.m.

Alternative A: Sunrise at Waipio Valley. There are locked gates now. Jeff Ikeda knows someone who will open gates for us; need 4WD vehicles. This is an all-day photo shoot (Jeff in charge). We will meet at Hilo Hawaiian Hotel at 5 a.m. and car-pool.

Alternative B: If it's too rainy, then it's not possible to cross the stream in Waipio Valley. Our alternative outing will be to visit Mauna Kea (Jeff will make decision on Saturday night at AT Exhibit opening).

Option B-1: Drive along Mana Road to Waimea (need 4WD vehicles);

Option B-2: Visit summit (warning: high altitude sickness; need 4WD vehicles);

Option B-3: Joy is willing to lead a hike on Pu'u O'o trail off Salile Road; need covered, sturdy shoes.

Each Club shall determine their own entry date deadline and devise any rules they wish to make the selection of the body of work to represent their club. Photographers wishing to enter the Allen-Tarleton Memorial Contest must contact their own local camera club. Check the following websites for meeting dates, times and contact info:

Eligibility: Only dues-paying CCCH clubs of good-standing may enter their members' entries. The $25/club dues are due on or before September 30, 2009. Such dues are payable to the Camera Club Council of Hawaii and may be paid with the entry fees to Joy San Buenaventura, 101 Aupuni Street, Suite 311; Hilo, HI 96720. If CD/DVD of entries is mailed, the check may accompany the CD/DVD.

Entry Requirements:

Except for the "Slide-Show/Movie" category, all digital images MUST be submitted in the following format:
1. All Images must be in JPEG format, RGB or Grayscale mode. Color space should be in sRGB mode.
2. Image file size may NOT be greater than 1 Mb; however an image whose longest side does not exceed 1024 pixels will not be disqualified if it surpasses the size limit
All entries must have file names that are as follows: Photo club initials _ initials of photographer _ title of photo.jpg. Example: In "hpc_js_niceflower.jpg", hpc is for Hilo Photo Club, js for initials of photographer-entrant John Smith, niceflower for title of picture.
1. "hps" is the designation for the Hawaii Photographic Society; "hpc" is for Hilo Photography Club; and "mcc" is for Maui Camera Club. Initials of photographer are ordered such that the first name initial is first.
No watermark, copyright notices, logos or other identifying marks of entrant on any entry is allowed. Copyright information may be placed in the entry's metadata.
No time limit on entries,i.e. photos/images can be taken at anytime.
All entries prior to enhancement/manipulation must have been an original photograph or digital image taken by entrant from a camera. For multiple-exposure or multiple-image entries, all images or exposures prior to enhancement/manipulations must be original photographs or original digital images taken by entrant from a camera.
Starting 2009, no prior A-T accepted entry is eligible. (This allows for entries accepted in other competitions to be entered into the A-T contest and with a digital database starting 2009 of accepted entries, enforcement is possible.).
Each entry is required to pay a $5 contribution towards the prize money; in addition to the cost of return mailing (and insurance if required by entrant) if the entry is submitted physically and the club requires a return of the CD/DVD. There will be separate rules and requirements for exhibits of accepted entries.

CATEGORIES:

Color: Color images which are photorealistic – the definition of what is photorealistic will be determined by the judges and no color entry will be disqualified if it meets all other requirements.
- Maximum 15 entries per club and 2 entries per person.
Monochrome: Duotone photorealistic images such as black-and-white, infrared black and white, selenium-toned, sepia-toned. The definition of what is photorealistic will be determined by the judges and no monochrome/duotoned entry will be disqualified if it meets all other criteria.
- Maximum 15 entries per club and 2 entries per person.
Slide-show/Movie: Multi-image moving images.
- 5 minute maximum.
- Must be formatted such that by clicking/double-clicking on the filename or icon the slide-show/movie entry will start playing. .
- Maximum 5 entries per club and 2 entries per person.
"Open": Any entry that is not photorealistic such as Photoshop compositions with multiple image sources, the use of "alternative" printing processes, works that incorporate "non-traditional" materials into the image, images that are formed using the collage technique, abstract or 3 dimensional objects that have a photograph as the principal subject matter of the work.

Photographers wishing to submit 3 dimensional works shall submit a photograph or photographs to illustrate their work for consideration by the jury.
- Maximum 15 entries per club and 2 entries per person. If entry is one that cannot be submitted digitally (such as 3-D presentations), club is responsible for all postage/delivery costs and shall provide a digital image of such entry for judging.
- Must be originally based on an image taken by a digital or traditional camera.

JUDGES WILL HAVE A RIGHT TO REASSIGN AN IMAGE TO A DIFFERENT CATEGORY. Maximum entry limits will only be determined at the time of entry and no disqualification will occur if judges reassign and thus, entry maximum requirement is surpassed.

PRIZES: 1^st Place per category for Color, Monochrome and Open: $100, 2^nd: $75, 3^rd: $50. For Slide-Show/Movie: $100. "Best in Class" and an "Honorable-mention" may be awarded if the judges believe that there is one deserving. JUDGES:

Codie King, Wailoa Center Director. She was born and raised on Oahu and is the fifth generation of her family in the Islands. She is a graduate of Boston University with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree and a recipient of the Silver Medal Award from the Royal Society of Arts Manufactures and Commerce 1984. She received her Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Ceramics from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1986. She returned to Hawaii in 1988 to pursue her career in art. Professor Michael Marshall, Associate professor at University of Hawaii, Hilo. He received his Masters in Fine Arts at Yale University. He has been a professor at UH-Hilo and Fontbonne College, St. Louis, MO since 1980. He has had multiple exhibitions of his work since 1977 and his work has been part of a number of public and private art including: St. Louis Art Museum, State Foundation of Culture and the Arts, Anheuser Busch, and AG Edwards. Dennis Taniguchi, East Hawaii Culture Center Director. He has a Masters degree in Geology and 30 years of Arts administration experience at San Francisco's Kearny Street Workshop and Japantown Art & Media Workshop. He began as a ceramicist and photographer and later worked professionally in graphic design, silkscreen and mural painting. He taught photography/video at Waiakea High and science at Ka`u High, gave tours at Lyman museum and served as Executive Officer for the Hawai`i Island Chamber of Commerce.

BY-LAWS OF THE CONSTITUTION

CAMERA CLUB COUNCIL OF HAWAI‘I

ARTICLE I – DUES

Annual dues shall be established by the Board of Directors for each year.

The fiscal year shall begin on the day following the last day of the annual meeting and continue through the last day of the ensuing annual meeting.

ARTICLE II – ELECTIONS

The Board of Directors shall consist of council members who shall be elected for a two year term, with a limit of three consecutive terms. Such Council members must come from either a member or an affiliate club. In order to provide continuity, the initial representative from Maui shall serve for one year, the representative from Hawai‘i County shall serve an initial term of two years, and the representative from Oahu shall serve an initial term of three years.

ARTICLE III – DUTIES OF THE OFFICERS

Duties of the President shall be: To preside at all Council meetings and Board of Director meetings: to appoint chairpersons of all committees; to act as Council Spokesperson; to generally supervise and keep in touch with all Council activities; and to reply promptly to all Council correspondence directed to the President.

Duties of the Vice President shall be: To assume duties of the President in his absence; to represent the President and the Board of Directors on their respective islands; to maintain liaison with Council clubs; to reply promptly to all Council correspondence directed to them; and to act as Council director on the Board of Directors.

Duties of the Secretary shall be: To keep minutes of all meetings; to forward Council records to the next Board of Directors within one month after the last day of the Annual Meeting.

Duties of the Treasurer shall be: To act as Treasurer of the Annual Convention and to forward the records and all Council Funds to the next Board of Directors within thirty days of the closing of the Annual Meeting; (all Council checks are to be signed by the Treasurer, and counter-signed by the President); and to act as a Council director on the Board of Directors.

ARTICLE IV – DUTIES OF COMMITTEES

The activities of the Council Committees shall be determined by the Board of Directors. The activities decided upon shall thereafter be carried out by the committee chairs and members appointed to the respective committees. Chairpersons shall prepare written reports of activities and progress periodically for presentation to the Board of Directors or the membership. The standing committees: 1) Annual Meeting and 2) Alan Tarleton, shall follow the existing rules as amended.

Committees shall exist for specified purposes for limited periods of time and shall disband when their duties are fulfilled. In the case of the standing committees the members shall be selected each year at the annual meeting and shall serve until their respective responsibilities have been fulfilled.

ARTICLE V – QUORUM

A quorum of the membership for the purpose of conducting Council business shall consist of not less than a majority vote of the member Clubs. Each club shall have one vote, and their club vote on the matter shall be tallied before the Annual meeting in order that their votes may be cast according to their wishes at the meeting. The results of the vote will then be tallied and announced to each club to verify their desires, and after written confirmation from the various clubs, it will be accepted or rejected according to the latter survey.

CONSTITUTION

CAMERA CLUB COUNCIL OF HAWAI‘I

ARTICLE I – NAME

This organization shall be known as the Camera Club Council of Hawai‘i.

ARTICLE II – AIMS

The aims of the Council a re: 1) To serve the Camera Clubs of Hawai‘i; 2) To further the enjoyment and mastery of photography through co-operation, effort, and good fellowship; 3) To recognize individual achievement in and contributions to photography and camera clubs.

ARTICLE III – MEETINGS

Annual meetings of the Council shall be held at a place, date and time to be set by the Board of Directors. All meetings of the Council and the Board shall be conducted in accordance with Roberts Rules of Order.

Each Club shall designate an official spokesman for the annual meeting and he shall cast the Club’s vote, and vote any proxy that may be assigned to the Club.

Written proxies may be voted at an annual meeting, but they shall apply only for the specific meeting for which they are issued, and no Camera Club spokesman or member of the Board may vote more than one proxy.

ARTICLE IV – MEMBERSHIP

Any Camera Club, operating in State of Hawai‘i, and having a membership of at least ten (10), persons may apply for membership, and, upon approval of a majority of the Board of Directors, be admitted to membership. Each member Club shall have one vote. Membership of any Club may be suspended, for good and sufficient reason, by action of the Board. The suspended Club shall have the right to appeal suspension, in which case the action of the Board shall be upheld or rescinded by a majority vote of the membership.

Affiliate Clubs: Clubs with less than ten (10) members but at least three active members may join as an affiliate club. Affiliate clubs do not have a vote as delineated above.

ARTICLE V – OFFICERS

The following shall be elected by the membership: 1) President; 2) Vice President; 3) Secretary; and 4) Treasurer.
ARTICLE VI – GOVERNANCE

There shall be a Board of Directors (the Council) composed of the officers in Article V, plus a representative from each island having a member club. Such representative shall represent up to three member clubs from an island. Additional representatives shall be added for each additional three clubs established on an island.

ARTICLE VII – COMMITTEES

The following standing committees shall be established to conduct Council activities as provided by Article IV of the By-Laws: 1) Annual Meeting; 2) Allen-Tarleton Photo Contest. Chairmen of the standing committees shall be appointed by the President with the approval of the Board of Directors. Each Council Club shall have one representative on each standing committee.

Special committees may be appointed by the President as required and discharged by him when they have completed their assignment.

ARTICLE VIII –BOARD of DIRECTORS

The management of Council business shall be directed by the Board of Directors composed of the elected and appointed officers (per ARTICLE V above). The Board of Directors shall meet as often as necessary to transact the business of the Council.

The majority of the Board shall constitute a quorum.

Written proxies may be voted, but they shall apply for the specific meeting for which they are issued, and no member of the Board may vote more than one proxy.

ARTICLE IX – AMENDMENTS

Amendments to the Constitution may be proposed by any Member Club to the Board of Directors and, if approved, may be incorporated into this Constitution if approved by a two-thirds majority at a membership meeting.

Amendments to the By-Laws of this Constitution may be proposed by a Member Club to the Board of Directors and, if approved, become a part of the By-Laws if approved by a majority vote at a membership meeting.

Notice of proposed amendments must be given in writing to all Member Clubs at least one month before the date of the membership meeting at which they are to be voted on.

AT Rules for 2007 AT Contest

SPONSOR:
The Camera Club Council of Hawaii.

DEADLINE:
August 15th of each year. All entries must be in the hands of the Contest and Exhibition Committee on this date.

COMMITTEE:
The Contest is conducted by the President of the Council and one member chosen by each Council Club. The Council President will provide clubs with copies of the rules and entry forms which must accompany all entries. The Committee, by majority vote, may settle questions relating to the rules. Only the judges may make value judgment on the entries. The Committee is responsible for selecting the judges, of whom there shall be at least three. The Committee will give each club a complete tabulation of the results of the judging within two weeks of judging.

GENERAL PROVISIONS:
The Contest is open to all Camera Clubs affiliated with the Camera Club Council of Hawaii (CCCH) in good standing. Each participating Club must have their dues paid up by the August 15th deadline. Each Club may enter a maximum of 15 Monochrome Prints, 15 Color Prints, 15 Slides, 5 Slide Essays, 5 Videos, and 5 Open Category entries. Individual limit is 2 per category where club limit is 15, and 1 per category where club limit is 5. No individual may submit through more than one Club. Pictures entered in one category may not be duplicates or closely similar to pictures by the same exhibitor in any other category. There must be a minimum of 5 entries from at least 2 different Clubs in a category in order to conduct a contest in that category. If this provision is not met, that category ‘s contest will be declared null and void for lack of “competition”.

DEFINITION OF “DIGITALLY-ENHANCED” & “NON-ENHANCED”:
Digitally-enhanced entries will be considered separately from “non-enhanced” digital images. Such enhanced images are to be entered in the OPEN CATEGORY only. The following modifications may be made to any entered image, whether by digital or traditional means, and that image will still be considered “non-enhanced”:
1. Cropping
2. Adjusting exposure (contrast, lightness/”dodging” & darkness/”burning”)
3. Color balance & saturation.

CATEGORIES:
1. MONOCHROME PRINTS
All prints must be mounted. Size of mounts is limited to 16x20 inches. Pictures must be taken by the exhibitor via film or digital means, but may be processed by the exhibitor or commercially. No hand coloring. Toned prints or prints made on colored stock are acceptable as long as the print is “monochrome”. If there is more than one color in the finished product, it must be entered in the COLOR PRINTS category.

2. COLOR PRINTS
All prints must be mounted. Size of mounts is limited to 16x20 inches. Hand
colored black & white prints will be placed in this category.

3. SLIDES
Only 2x2 inches mounts are eligible. Black & white and other “monochrome slides are also permitted. Non-enhanced digitally-projected “slide” entries are also accepted.

4. SLIDE ESSAYS
Only 2x2 inches mounts are eligible. Minimum of 3 and maximum of 15 slides per essay. Essays may be any related group of slides dealing with a sequential operation or a series of slides related to a common theme. Non-enhanced digitally-projected “slide” entries are also accepted.

5. OPEN CATEGORY
This is a category that anticipates the new technologies in photography. The finished product must contain photography in its creation. Maximum print size is 16x20 inches. Entrants who submit three-dimensional or other forms of work will be required to pay the shipping costs (to and from), insurance charges, and other related expenses involved. Also, neither the Council nor the Contest Committee will be held liable for any damages to the item submitted for judging.

ELIGIBILITY:
There is no time limit as to when the pictures were taken. However, no pictures previously accepted in the Allen-Tarleton Contest are eligible. This also means that a slide or digital image accepted in the Slide Category may not be printed and entered in any Print category, and vice versa, nor may a slide included in a Slide Essay be entered in the individual Slides Category. To be eligible to enter the Allen-Tarleton Memorial Contest, an entry must not have been shown or entered in any other competition. “Midyear Slide Contest” entrants are acceptable.

PREPARATION FOR SUBMISSION:
SLIDES – All slides must have a spot at the lower left corner when the slides are viewed normally (upper right when placed in a projection tray). They must also have the exhibitor’s full name, mailing address, title and club affiliation on each slide. See diagram below:

DIGITAL FILES – All digital files are to be in JPEG format, and no larger than 5MB in size. The file name shall be the title of the image. Submission can be made via email, jump drive, CF card or CD, and must include the exhibitor’s full name, mailing address, and club affiliation.

MONOCHROME, COLOR and OPEN CATEGORY prints must be mounted and have the exhibitor’s full name, mailing address, title and club affiliation on the back of the mount in the upper left corner. No title or exhibitor’s name will be permitted on the front of any print. Hanging devices, metal or otherwise, are not permitted on prints.

JUDGING:
All entries will be judged on a point scale of 1-100 by each judge (of which there shall be at least 3).

CLUB SCORING:
Points scored will be assigned to the submitting club – only entries scoring 70% or more of the total possible points are counted in the final tabulation of points scored by the club in each category to determine its standing in that category. The total points of all categories will determine the club standing for the Allen-Tarleton Trophy which is presented to the overall winner.

AWARDS:
1 Sponsored Prize for 1st place in each category
Framed Certificates for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each category

After the contest, if there is one entry that the judges consider to be so outstanding that it merits special recognition, they may award that entry with an additional award. The judges’ decisions are final.

RESPONSIBILITY:
The Council and its members agree to take care of all entries, but cannot guarantee against loss or damage, nor assume financial responsibility.

ACCEPTANCE:
Submission of entries signifies acceptance of these rules.

Notice of proposed amendments must be given in writing to all Member Clubs at least one month before the date of the membership meeting at which they are to be voted on.

Annual dues shall be $10.00 per club, payable in advance. Each club shall be assessed $1.00 per member per year to help defray the expenses of the Executive Secretary. established by the Board for each year.

ARTICLE II - ELECTIONS

Council Officers shall be elected annually.

The President shall appoint a Nominating Committee composed of one representative from each member club. The Nominating Committee will prepare a single slate of nominees and obtain the agreement from the nominees to serve if elected. The Chairman shall present the slate at the annual meeting. Additional nominations can be made from the floor. A secret written ballot shall then be taken, if necessary. Each Council Club shall have one vote. No President may serve more than one term as President within a five year period.

Vacancies in Council offices shall be filled by the President, subject to the approval of the Executive Board. Vacancy of the President's office shall be filled by advancement of the Vice President for the island on which the President resides.

The activities decided upon shall thereafter be carried out by the committee chairs and members appointed to the respective committees. Committee chairmenpersons shall prepare written reports of activities and progress periodically for presentation to the Board of Directors or the membership. The standing committees: 1) Convention and Honors, 2) Allen Tarleton, and 3) Nominating shall follow the existing rules as amended.

Committees shall exist for specified purposes for limited periods of time and shall disband when their duties are fulfilled. In the case of the standing committees the members shall be selected each year at the Annual Convention and shall serve until their respective responsibilities have been fulfilled.

ARTICLE V - QUORUM

A quorum of the membership for the purpose of conducting Council business shall consist of not less than a majority vote of the member Clubs. Each club shall have one vote, and their club vote on the matter shall be tallied before the Annual meeting in order that their votes may be cast according to their wishes at the meeting. The results of the vote will then be tallied and announced to each club to verify their desires, and after written confirmation from the various clubs, it will be accepted or rejected according to the latter survey.

The Contest is conducted by the President of the Council and one member chosen from each Council Club. The Council President will provide clubs with copies of the rules and entry forms well in advance of the deadline. The completed entry forms must accompany all entries. The Committee, by majority vote, may settle questions relating to the rules. Only the judges may make value judgment on the entries. The Committee is responsible for selecting the judges, of whom there shall be at least three. The Committee will give each club a complete tabulation of the results of the judging within two weeks of judging.

GENERAL PROVISIONS:
The Contest is open to all Camera Clubs affiliated with the Camera Club Council of Hawaii (CCCH) in good standing. Each participating Club must have their dues paid up by the August 15th deadline, to offset shipping and handling costs. Each Club may enter a maximum of 15 Monochrome Prints, 15 Color Prints, 10+10 Projected Images (Slides + Digital Files), 5+5 Projected Essays (Slides + Digital Files), and 15 Open Category entries. Individual limit is 2 per category where club limit is 10 or 15, and 1 per category where club limit is 5. No individual may submit through more than one Club. Pictures entered in one category may not be duplicates or closely similar to pictures by the same exhibitor in any other category. There must be a minimum of 5 entries from at least 2 different Clubs in a category in order to conduct a contest in that category. If this provision is not met, that category's contest will be declared null and void for lack of competition.

DEFINITION OF DIGITALLY-ENHANCED & NON-ENHANCED:
Enhanced entries will be considered separately from non-enhanced images. Such Enhanced images are to be entered in the OPEN CATEGORY only. The following modifications may be made to any entered image, whether by digital or traditional means, and that image will still be considered non-enhanced:
1. Cropping
2. Adjusting exposure (contrast, lightness/dodging & darkness/burning, High Dynamic Range)
3. Realistic color balance & saturation.
4. Use of non-textured filters.

CATEGORIES:
1. BLACK & WHITE / MONOCHROME PRINTS
All prints must be mounted. Size of mounts is limited to 16x20 inches. Pictures must be taken by the exhibitor via film or digital means, and may be processed by the exhibitor or commercially. No hand coloring, except in the OPEN category. Toned prints or prints made on colored stock are acceptable as long as the print is monochrome. If there is more than one color in the finished product, it must be entered in the COLOR PRINTS category.

2. COLOR PRINTS
All prints must be mounted. Size of mounts is limited to 16x20 inches maximum.
Hand colored black & white prints will be placed in this category.

3. SLIDES/PROJECTED IMAGES
a. Traditional film slides: Only 2x2 inch mounts are eligible.
b. Non-enhanced digital images. See PREPARATION FOR SUBMISSION.

Maximum print size is 16x20 inches. Digital submissions may require the entrant to provide the necessary hardware/software support. Entrants who submit three-dimensional or other forms of work will be required to pay the shipping costs (to and from), insurance charges, and other related expenses involved. Also, neither the Council nor the Contest Committee will be held liable for any damages to the item(s) submitted for judging.

ELIGIBILITY:
There is no time limit as to when the pictures were taken. However, no pictures previously accepted in the Allen-Tarleton Contest are eligible. This also means that a slide or digital image accepted in the Projected Image/Essay Categories may not be printed and entered in any Print category, and vice versa, nor may an image included in a Projected Image Essay be entered in the individual Projected Image Category. To be eligible to enter the Allen-Tarleton Memorial Contest, an entry must not have been shown or entered in any other Statewide, Nationwide or International competition. Local & Midyear Slide Contest entrants are acceptable.

ENTRY FEE:
Each entry shall have a fee of $2.00 to be eligible. Entry fees are to cover the costs of awards as well as refreshments for those involved in the judging session.

PREPARATION FOR SUBMISSION:
SLIDES - All slides must have a spot at the lower left corner when the slides are viewed normally (upper right when placed in a projection tray). They must also have the exhibitor's full name, mailing address, title and club affiliation on each slide. See diagram below:

DIGITAL FILES - All digital files are to be in JPEG format, and no larger than 1.5MB in size. The file name shall be the title of the image. In the case of an essay, the file name of each image must have the order it is to be viewed. Ex.: filename1.jpg is the first image to be viewed of the essay titled filename.
Submission can be made via email, jump drive, CF card or CD, and must include the exhibitor's full name, mailing address, and club affiliation.

MONOCHROME & COLOR and OPEN CATEGORY prints are to be on photo or art paper, and must be mounted and have the exhibitor's full name, mailing address, title and club affiliation on the back of the mount in the upper left corner. No title or exhibitor's name will be permitted on the front of any print. Hanging devices, metal or otherwise, are not permitted on prints.

OPEN CATEGORY prints on alternative media must also include the exhibitor's full name, mailing address, title and club affiliation in a location not visible to the judges.

JUDGING:
All entries will be judged on a point scale of 1-100 by each judge (of which there shall be at least 3).

CLUB SCORING:
Points scored will be assigned to the submitting club - only entries scoring 70% or more of the total possible points are counted in the final tabulation of points scored by the club in each category to determine its standing in that category. The total points of all categories will determine the club standing for the Allen-Tarleton Trophy which is presented to the overall winner.

AWARDS:

1 Sponsored Prize for 1st place in each category.

Matted Certificates printed on photo-weight stock for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each category and sub-category.
Note: All 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners wishing to have their winning image(s) on their certificate(s) must submit an 800-pixel JPEG file thereof.

At the conclusion of the judging, if there is one entry that the judges consider to be so outstanding that it merits special recognition, they may award that entry with an additional award. The judges' decisions are final.

Aloha!!

I thank all the clubs for making the last convention wonderful. By having a floating convention, we were able to see the many islands and experience sites not commonly found by just being a tourist. Of course, there were still perennial favorites like sunrise at Haleakala, Waimea Canyon in Kauai and the active volcano in Hilo.

Thank you so much to Maui Camera Club and John Hugg for leading the 2-day Maui portion of the convention. We wanted to see the Olivine pools with Tom Elliot, Haleakala at sunrise with John and Tom, Kahului with Carolyn Pavloff and Red sand beach with John– and we did.

Thank you to Rick Decker, who has misgivings about being part of CCCH, but still showed us Kona and his digital infrared techniques. Thank you to Jeff Ikeda & Ken Goodrich for hiking to the flows, to Robbyn Peck for her panorama workshop, to Steve Godzak for ferrying people to the panorama workshop and the Kulaniapia falls.
Thank you to the on-ship workshops by John Hugg on Adobe Photoshop and by Dan Kinoshita on publishing our photos.

With an impromptu meeting at Grandma’s at the slopes of Haleakala, we voted to accept the reality of digital photography and the problems with attempting to police “enhancement” created by Photoshop versus “enhancements” using filters.
I suggest that at the next CCCH meeting we consider removing the slide essay category in lieu of a combined digital video/slideshow category with the proliferation of slideshow software now. Food for thought.

Cruise convention taken in - for banquet, registrations and Kona car rental ($60 received) gave us a total of $582.00.

Cruise convention expenses - for Mailing, engraving costs, the above Kona car rental ($55.37) and refunds made our expenditures a total of $547.87.

So the final balance leaves us with a plus of $34.13. (Since the Kauai car rentals and gas expenses were settled outside of CCCH it balanced itself out.)

Our current CCCH Savings account balance as of 11/7/06 is $2394.14 and our current CCCH Checking account balance as of 11/7/06 is $347.37.

So the current combined CCCH total balance is $2741.51.

60^TH CCCH Convention

Susan Miyasaka and her committee have worked on a mix of photographic opportunities, workshops and fun in this convention. Option 2: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park: strenuous 1.5 mile walk to lava flow over rough rocks; approximately 2 hours round-trip; must be in good physical condition; possibly see skylights and break-outs.

Option 3: Kalapana: visit McKenzie Beach park; travel on Red road (may be under construction).

October 25: Maui –

Option 1: Drive the lush north shore Hana Hwy. eastward, with definite stops at Keanae Peninsula, Nahiku, Hana Town & Red Sand Beach. The only real hiking will be to the red sand beach; from the parking spot, about an hour total including shooting time. Note: the red sand beach is a known clothing-optional area. Likely return route: the backside road thru Kaupo.

Option 2: Drive along the west Maui north shore, with definite stops at Kahakuloa Hawaiian rural village, the Olivine Pools (involves a short hike down over some jagged lava formations), and the Nakalele Blowhole (similar hike to Olivine Pools). May also do the Na Ala Hele coastline eco-trail, Honolua Bay overlook, and Lahaina banyan tree.

October 26: Maui –

Option A: If the ship will allow us to disembark at 3:30AM, those who want to will meet vehicles in the parking lot & head for sunrise atop 10,000' Haleakala. Return trip down the volcano would involve breakfast at Grandma's in Kula; be prepared to purchase what you want to eat.

Option A-1 (Upcountry Maui): Kula Botanical Gardens, Keokea Town, Ulupalakua and the Tedeschi Winery.

Option A-2 (Upcountry Maui): Anyone interested in the ~1 hour "Zipline" exhilarating experience will pay $40, and must have us make reservations ahead for you. Follow this with a dirt-road drive to Poli Poli State Park, or visit the Lavender Farm)

Option B: Central Maui: Iao Valley & Maui Tropical Botanical Gardens, Maui Tropical Plantation

October 28: Kauai - Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park; be prepared for rain; adventurous people could hike on Kokee Road to overlook (1.5 miles); John Hugg and Peter Anderson will rent 7-passenger mini-vans from Thrifty (this rental car company will pick up drivers at pier) at $45 per day plus tax plus fees. Be prepared to start out early as close to 8 a.m. as possible; all day excursion; may try to do sunset photography before returning to ship.

October 29: Kauai

Option 1: Waialua River boat cruise; Fern grotto is being stabilized and should re-open in October ($20 with discount for groups). This is an easy excursion of 2 hours.

Option 2: Kayaking on Waialua River for adventurous; $45 for a half-day; 2-person kayaks.

Option 3: Kilauea Lighthouse for bird-watchers.

CRUISE WORKSHOPS: Both John Hugg and Dan Kinoshita will give digital photography presentations and will be available for Adobe Photoshop tips/workshops. Results of Allen-Tarleton contest 2006

Thank you to the three Allen-Tarleton judges for 2006: Don Brown, Linus Chao, and John Dawson. They gave freely of their time and expertise to judge the photographic entries in three different media (slides, digital, and prints!).

Thank you to: Ricky and Miranda Ogata for videotaping the judging of the entries. A copy of the videotape will be sent to CCCH clubs.

Results are below: There are 20 prints that were accepted with a minimum of 210 points total. As a result, all 20 prints will be accepted for the exhibit at the Tanimoto Gallery.

Congratulations to Mary Goodrich for "Banyan Onomea!" The judges selected her print as the overall winner and she will receive the overall prize from Canon Hawaii.

The overall club winner is Hilo Photography Club (HPC) with 2035 points; second is Maui Camera Club with 1791 points, and third is Hawaii Photographic Society (HPS) with 677 points.

In addition, each judge will be given the option to select a photograph that didn't make the 210 point minimum, but the judge feels that it should be included in the exhibit at the Tanimoto Gallery. Results of the judges' choices will be posted later and winners will be notified.

Each accepted off-island photographer with prints needs to contact Susan Miyasaka (contest chair) at sc_miyasaka@yahoo.com to let her know whether to mail back your accepted entries with the rest of the club entries, or if you prefer to have your prints framed in Hilo. Susan is willing to get a couple of price estimates from local frame shopes for framing and glazing (optional); of course the photographer will be responsible to pay for the framing, but this saves the cost of postage back & forth. If you decide on this option, please let Susan know whether you prefer an off-shelf frame, professional framing job, wood versus metal frame, glazing, etc.

WINNERS will be notified via their club representatives. The 24 top vote-getters will be selected for an exhibit at the Tanimoto Gallery. Photographs must be printed (if digital files or slides), mounted, framed, be ready to hang (glazing is optional) and delivered to Tanimoto Gallery, 296 Kilauea St., Hilo, HI 96720 by Friday, October 13. Photographs may be sold; if interested, photographers must be sure to let us know the price of their photograph; Brian Tanimoto has agreed to a reduced commission rate of 20% and he reserves the right to refuse to hang any images that do not meet his standards. Participants in the Convention cruise will visit the Tanimoto Gallery during the Hilo stop to admire these winning photographs!

Pre-cruise Luncheon with Canon Hawaii at the Hong Kong Harborview Seafood Restaurant at 1 p.m. on October 23 in Aloha Tower Marketplace. A 7-course dim sum lunch will be served at $18 per person. You're welcome to join us for this banquet even if you don't plan to come on the Convention cruise.

Tentative On-Shore Excursions are:

October 24: Hilo – Lava viewing at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park IF there are active breakouts; excursion through a small portion of the Kazamura lava tube (longest lava tube in the world) and the black sand beach at Punalu'u.

October 25: Maui - Red Sand Beach and Hana; OR Olivine Pools and Blow Hole.

October 26: Maui – if cruiseship allows for early departure, sunrise at Haleakala, “zipline” for $40 for the adventurous; or Kula Botanical Gardens

October 27: Kona - $75 swim-with dolphins cruise or 4-wheel drive rental to Green Sand Beach (Susan and Peter’s idea of visiting the different sands of Hawaii). Possible options of snorkel cruise or visit to new National Park by Kona State Beach Park.

October 28-29: Kauai – van rental to visit Waimea Canyon and Kokee Park; 2^nd day possible – zodiac rental to visit Na Pali Coast without hiking (white sand ?)

PRESIDENT’S PLEA: I know that there are always last-minute decision makers, but PLEASE make your reservations soon so that we can have a head-count for the vehicle rentals. We made a special arrangement with Linda, Joana-Rae’s predecessor, that if we book through her, she will prorate the 16^th person’s fare (16^th person is free for group bookings) so that our fares will all be discounted.

Further, we need a roommate for Rob DeCamp of Maui Camera Club. Please contact your club representative and we will put you into contact with Rob directly to make arrangements.

On June 3, I was on a boat at Hawaii Kai Marina, mingling with the rich Marina residents and I met a couple who had just gotten off the Pride of Hawaii’s inaugural trip from San Francisco. They gushed at how fabulous it was and they said that the travel agents aboard, in comparing the interisland cruise ships, said the following: The Pride of Aloha is the Motel 6; the Pride of America is the Hilton; and the Pride of Hawaii is the Ritz Carlton. So expect plush at discounted inaugural year Kamaaina prices !!

I believe we will enjoy ourselves immensely (I know I will) especially with the camaraderie of photographers.

Regardless of the fact that each year we wonder whether there will be another convention, everyone who shows up has a grand time and there is always something new to learn because there is always someone, especially now with the digital savvy photographers, who knows something you don’t know. Don’t you shoot better photos when there is competition??

Revised Allen-Tarleton Contest Rules 2006

SPONSOR:

The Camera Club Council of Hawaii.

DEADLINE:

August 15^th of each year. All entries must be in the hands of the Contest and Exhibition Committee on this date.

COMMITTEE:

The Contest is conducted by the President of the Council and one member chosen by each Council Club. The Council President will provide clubs with copies of the rules and entry forms which must accompany all entries. The Committee, by majority vote, may settle questions relating to the rules. Only the judges may make value judgment on the entries. The Committee is responsible for selecting the judges, of whom there shall be at least three. The Committee will give each club a complete tabulation of the results of the judging within two weeks of judging.

GENERAL PROVISIONS:

The Contest is open to all Camera Clubs affiliated with the Camera Club Council of Hawaii (CCCH) in good standing. Each participating Club must have their dues paid up by the August 15^th deadline. Each Club may enter a maximum of 15 Monochrome Prints, 15 Color Prints, 15 Slides, 5 Slide Essays, and 5 Open Category entries. Individual limit is 2 per category where club limit is 15, and 1 per category where club limit is 5. No individual may submit through more than one Club. Pictures entered in one category may not be duplicates or closely similar to pictures by the same exhibitor in any other category. There must be a minimum of 5 entries from at least 2 different Clubs in a category in order to conduct a contest in that category. If this provision is not met, that category ‘s contest will be declared null and void for lack of “competition”.

DEFINITION OF “DIGITALLY-ENHANCED” & “NON-ENHANCED”:

Digitally-enhanced entries will be considered separately from “non-enhanced” digital images. Such enhanced images are to be entered in the OPEN CATEGORY only. The following modifications may be made to any entered image, whether by digital or traditional means, and that image will still be considered “non-enhanced”:

1. Cropping

2. Adjusting exposure (contrast, lightness/”dodging” & darkness/”burning”)

3. Color balance & saturation.

CATEGORIES:

1. MONOCHROME PRINTS

All prints must be mounted. Size of mounts is limited to 16x20 inches. Pictures must be taken by the exhibitor via film or digital means, but may be processed by the exhibitor or commercially. No hand coloring. Toned prints or prints made on colored stock are acceptable as long as the print is “monochrome”. If there is more than one color in the finished product, it must be entered in the COLOR PRINTS category.

2. COLOR PRINTS

All prints must be mounted. Size of mounts is limited to 16x20 inches. Hand
colored black & white prints will be placed in this category.

3. SLIDES

Only 2x2 inches mounts are eligible. Black & white and other “monochrome slides are also permitted. Non-enhanced digitally-projected “slide” entries are also accepted.

4. SLIDE ESSAYS

Only 2x2 inches mounts are eligible. Minimum of 3 and maximum of 15 slides per
essay. Essays may be any related group of slides dealing with a sequential operation or
a series of slides related to a common theme. Non-enhanced digitally-projected “slide”
entries are also accepted.

5. OPEN CATEGORY

This is a category that anticipates the new technologies in photography. The finished product must contain photography in its creation. Maximum print size is 16x20 inches. Entrants who submit three-dimensional or other forms of work will be required to pay the shipping costs (to and from), insurance charges, and other related expenses involved. Also, neither the Council nor the Contest Committee will be held liable for any damages to the item submitted for judging.

ELIGIBILITY:

There is no time limit as to when the pictures were taken. However, no pictures previously accepted in the Allen-Tarleton Contest are eligible. This also means that a slide or digital image accepted in the Slide Category may not be printed and entered in any Print category, and vice versa, nor may a slide included in a Slide Essay be entered in the individual Slides Category. To be eligible to enter the Allen-Tarleton Memorial Contest, an entry must not have been shown or entered in any other competition. “Midyear Slide Contest” entrants are acceptable.

PREPARATION FOR SUBMISSION:

SLIDES – All slides must have a spot at the lower left corner when the slides are viewed normally (upper right when placed in a projection tray). They must also have the exhibitor’s full name, mailing address, title and club affiliation on each slide. See diagram below:

DIGITAL FILES – All digital files are to be in JPEG format, and no larger than 5MB in size. The file name shall be the title of the image. Submission can be made via email, jump drive, CF card or CD, and must include the exhibitor’s full name, mailing address, and club affiliation.

MONOCHROME, COLOR and OPEN CATEGORY prints must be mounted and have the exhibitor’s full name, mailing address, title and club affiliation on the back of the mount in the upper left corner. No title or exhibitor’s name will be permitted on the front of any print. Hanging devices, metal or otherwise, are not permitted on prints.

JUDGING:

All entries will be judged on a point scale of 1-100 by each judge (of which there shall be at least 3).

CLUB SCORING:

Points scored will be assigned to the submitting club – only entries scoring 70% or more of the total possible points are counted in the final tabulation of points scored by the club in each category to determine its standing in that category. The total points of all categories will determine the club standing for the Allen-Tarleton Trophy which is presented to the overall winner.

AWARDS:

1 Sponsored Prize for 1^st place in each category

Framed Certificates for 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd places in each category

After the contest, if there is one entry that the judges consider to be so outstanding that it merits special recognition, they may award that entry with an additional award. The judges’ decisions are final.

RESPONSIBILITY:

The Council and its members agree to take care of all entries, but cannot guarantee against loss or damage, nor assume financial responsibility.

ACCEPTANCE:

Submission of entries signifies acceptance of these rules.

CCCH Convention 2006 Cruise

The next Camera Club Council of Hawaii Convention will be held starting October 23, 2006. It will be a 7-day Hawaiian island cruise on Pride of Hawaii (newest ship of Norwegian Cruise Line).

Itinerary is as follows:
Lvs. Honolulu on Monday, Oct. 23 at 8 p.m.
Day 1 - Hilo
Day 2, 3 - Kahului - 2 nights
Day 4 - Kona
Day 5, 6 - Nawiliwili, Kaui - 2 nights
Day 7 - Honolulu - arrives Monday, October 30 at 7 a.m.

Prices per person double occupancy are as follows:
Inside cabins:
KK - Deck 5 - $569 + $140 (fees) + $50.76 (taxes)=$759.76;
K - Deck 4 - $559 + $140 + $50.34 = $749.34;
JJ - Deck 9 - $589.00 + $140 + $51.59 = $780.59;
J - Deck 8 - $579.00 + $140 + $51.18 = $770.18;
II - Deck 11 - $609 + $140 + 52.42 = $801.42;
I - Deck 10 - $599 + $140 + $52.01 = $791.01.

Outside cabins:
F - $679.00 + $140 + 55.34 = $874.34.

Balcony:
$859 + $140 + $62.82 = $1061.82.

In addition, once on board, each person will need to pay $10/day for tips for a total of $70.00. Alcoholic beverages and soda are extra. Some people have said that this cost is expensive, but consider that about $100 a day includes lodging, transportation, and all the great food that you can eat! (We calculated that a 3-day trip to Molokai would be close to $470!)

For every 8 cabins that we book under CCCH, we get one free person double-occupancy (probably the cheapest room). We plan to split this discounted fare among all people who have signed up.

At each inter-island stop, we hope to make arrangements with each camera club on that island for day-trips for photography. Except for Kauai where we don't have any contacts with camera clubs, we will need to make our own off-ship photographing arrangements (optional).
